7 DAY ITINERARY - AUCKLAND TO CHRISTCHURCH

Travel Day 1: Auckland to Hamilton
Depart: 7.45am - Arrive: 10.15am
Take the Train to Hamilton and start discovering the mighty Waikato.Hamilton is New Zealand’s fifth largest city and gateway to the Waikato. Time spent there is never boring with so many great adventures within close proximity. Whether its black water rafting, glow worms and caves or communing with hobbits, Hamilton is the place to start.

Travel Day 2: Hamilton to National Park
Depart: 10.15am - Arrive: 1.15pm
A true wilderness wonderland - National Park Village borders the dual World Heritage Tongariro National Park (Tongariro Crossing) to the east and the Whanganui National Park to the West. The Village is located near the base of Mt Ruapehu, on the volcanic plateau, in the central North Island. With wonderful views of all three mountains, Mt Tongariro, Mt Ngauruhoe and Mt Ruapehu. National Park Village is the perfect place to go skiing in winter, or in summer walking the Tongariro Crossing or biking the 42 Traverse mountain bike track.

Travel Day 3: National Park to Ohakune
Depart 1.15pm – Arrive 1.45pm
Situated at the southern gateway to the magnificent Turoa ski field, Ohakune is the perfect place to visit in winter. In summer, enjoy the Ohakune Old Coach Road walking and cycling track. This a great way to experience the unique sights of the southern volcanic plateau.

Travel Day 4: Ohakune to Wellington
Depart 1.45pm – Arrive 6.25pm
Wellington is known for its funky bars and lively restaurants, its glistening waterfront, the many marvels of Te Papa... the list goes on. What better way to get there and experience it all, than on the Northern Explorer train. There is alot of accomodation choices in Wellington and some places are just a stone’s throw from Wellington Railway Station, right in the vibrant heart of the city.

Travel Day 5: Wellington to Kaikoura
Depart: 8.30am - Arrive: 3.20pm
From Wellington you board an Interislander ferry for a daytime sailing from Wellington, with it's picturesque harbour, crossing Cook Strait before entering the magnificent Marlborough Sounds. The 3 hour (92 kilometers) ferry journey is aboard a modern ship with a range of on board facilities from eateries, a shop, movie theatre, a games arcade, a large bar with live entertainment, numerous passenger lounges, open air decks and a friendly on board crew to assist you. Your Interislander journey ends at Picton located in a sheltered marine harbour where you will have time to experience this charming small town. From Picton you board the Coastal Pacific train traveling South along the eastern coast of the South Island, passing through the local Marlborough vineyards, Lake Grassmere Salt Ponds and stopping at Kaikoura - famous for viewing whales and dolphins, for 1 or more nights stay.

Travel Day 6: Kaikoura to Christchurch
Depart: 3.28pm - Arrive: 6.20pm
The next day you board the Coastal Pacific train at Kaikoura Station to travel south following the stunning coastline before heading inland through the Canterbury Plains to the Garden City of Christchurch for 1 or more nights stay.

Travel Day 7: Christchurch to Greymouth  
Depart: 8.15am - Return: 6.05pm
Today travel between Christchurch and Greymouth, from one coast of New Zealand to the other and return. From your carriage you'll see the fields of the Canterbury Plains and farmland, followed by the spectacular gorges and river valleys of the Waimakariri River, as you ascend through the Southern Alps to the alpine village of Arthurs Pass. From Arthurs Pass you'll descend through the Otira tunnel to the lush beech rain forests of the West Coast through to Greymouth. After a hour stopover in Greymouth, The TranzAlpine train departs Greymouth heading east to the Southern Alps ascending up through the Otira tunnel to the alpine village of Arthurs Pass,, then slowly descending through river valleys of the Waimakariri River, crossing the Canterbury Plains to Christchurch.

Christchurch to Greymouth
Depart: 8.15am - Arrive: 12.45pm
Today travel between Christchurch and Greymouth, from one coast of New Zealand to the other and return. From your carriage you'll see the fields of the Canterbury Plains and farmland, followed by the spectacular gorges and river valleys of the Waimakariri River, as you ascend through the Southern Alps to the alpine village of Arthurs Pass. From Arthurs Pass you'll descend through the Otira tunnel to the lush beech rain forests of the West Coast through to Greymouth. This is a great base for visits to Punakaiki and the always popular glaciers. From Greymouth you can head south to the Glaciers for 1 or 2 night stopover in the townships of Franz Josef or Fox Glacier and onto Wanaka and Queenstown or north to Westport through the Buller Gorge to Nelson.
