Service Announcement: Northern Explorer Bus Replacements – Auckland to Hamilton/ Hamilton to Auckland

We wish to inform our valued passengers of an upcoming service change on the Northern Explorer train due to scheduled network maintenance.

Affected Dates:

  • 27 June – 12 July 2025

  • 19 – 30 September 2025

  • 3 – 4 October 2025

Impact on Travel:
During these dates, the tracks between Auckland Strand Railway Station and Hamilton will be closed due to essential rail maintenance.

  • From Auckland to Hamilton: Passengers will transfer by bus from Auckland Strand or Papakura Station to Hamilton Station.

  • From Hamilton to Auckland: Passengers will transfer by bus from Hamilton Station to Papakura or Auckland Strand Station.


Scenic Routes Unaffected:

Rest assured, you will not miss a significant portion of the scenic route. The most picturesque parts of the journey are located south of Hamilton, and the train journey between Hamilton and Wellington will operate as usual.


Flexibility for Travelers:

To accommodate your plans, you may:

  • Reschedule your travel to a different date.

  • Request a 100% refund if you prefer not to travel during this period.

Wellington City and Bays Tour (morning) WLG-WLG GSWW1 (0900-1200)

Take in Wellington's most scenic highlights on a half-day tour of the city and its surrounds – the perfect way to get your bearings in New Zealand's capital city.

See Wellington's beautiful waterfront from some of the city's most picturesque viewpoints, like the summit of Mount Victoria, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the city, its hills and harbour.

Wellington has many fascinating examples of classic architecture – see the iconic Beehive, New Zealand's main parliamentary building, and the Old Government Buildings, the largest wooden building in the Southern Hemisphere. Visit Old Saint Paul's Cathedral, a fine example of Revival Gothic architecture.

Take in the beauty of the Wellington Botanic Gardens including the Lady Norwood Rose Gardens and native bush, and drive around the rugged Wellington coastline discovering hidden bays and some of Wellington's most popular beaches.

As you travel around the Miramar Peninsula and southern bays, you'll see the picturesque seaside suburb of Seatoun, as well as Pencarrow and the Baring Head Lighthouse, while enjoying unobstructed views of Wellington's harbour entrance.
